Melghat Tiger Reserve

Melghat Tiger Reserve is located in the Amravati district of Maharashtra on the southern offshoot of the Satpura Hill Range, called Gavilgarh Hills. Declared a Wildlife Sanctuary in 1967 and notified as a Tiger Reserve in 1974, Melghat is among the first nine tiger reserves notified in India under Project Tiger.

The name 'Melghat' translates to 'confluence of ghats', describing the endless rolling valleys, steep ravines, and five major river tributaries (Sipna, Khandu, Khapra, Garga, and Dolar) that carve through its dense teak forests. Rediscovered here after decades, the endangered Forest Owlet shares these valleys with Royal Bengal Tigers, Sloth Bears, and Korku tribal communities.
