First 9 Tiger Reserves of India
Melghat was among the very first 9 tiger reserves declared in 1973–74 under Project Tiger, launched by the Government of India to protect the dwindling Bengal Tiger population.
The Name "Melghat"

Melghat acts as a vital regional water sponge, serving as the catchment basin for 5 major perennial rivers: Khandu, Khapra, Sipna, Garga, and Dolar, which all drain into the sacred Tapti River.
Highest Peak: Vairat
At 1,178 metres (3,865 ft) above sea level, Vairat is the highest point in Melghat Tiger Reserve, offering breathtaking panoramic vistas of the Gawilghur hill range.
